Thoughts of Darkness is an adventure module for the Ravenloft setting using the 2nd-edition ruleset. It centers around mind flayers in the realm of Bluetspur.
Synopsis[]
Bluetspur is a domain ruled by the Lord Elder Brain. His minion the High Master Illithid has long wished to usurp him and plans to become an illithid vampire with the powers of both creatures. He made a pact to overthrow Strahd von Zarovich with Strahd's grandniece Lyssa in exchange for vampirism. However, his alien physiology is incompatible with vampirism and the only way to truly create an illithid vampire is to turn a vampire into a mind flayer and such creations are insane and must be destroyed immediately.
When a member of the Brotherhood of the Contemplative Order learned of a device called the Apparatus that can transport the High Master's brain into a vampire illithid tadpole, he came to Lyssa. However, two other members of the order, Annitella and Lord Drassak stole and hid the Rod that powered the device. After being transformed into octopus-like broken ones (which bear a striking resemblance to mind flayers), Annitella escaped, which is where the adventurers come in.
